A Spirometry test (Lung Function Test) for the diagnosis of lung diseases.
It is the pulmonary function test, which is conducted to see how well your lungs are by measuring how much and how quickly a person breathes out and breathes in the air.

- Don’t eat too much before test
- Wear loose or comfortable clothes
- Inform doctor about your current medications if any
- Don’t do any vigorous activity before the test
- Don’t use short acting inhaler before the test
- Don’t drink or smoke before test
How spirometry works?
This whole process will take no longer than 45 minutes or an hour. A clip will be placed on your nose to keep the nostril closed so that you can breathe through the mouth. While doing so, you have to seal your lips tightly around the mouth of the tube so air will not leak. You will be asked to take a deep breathe and breathe out for few seconds in the tube. You will have to do this for at least 3 times to get accurate result.
RESULTS
- A computerized sensor will calculate and graph the result. it also records the total volume of air forced out of the lungs. This is the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). The percentage of the FVC exhaled in the first second (FEV1) is also calculated with spirometry. Forced expiratory volume (FEV) shows how much air you can force from your lungs in one second. This reading helps your doctor assess the severity of your breathing problems. Lower FEV-1 readings indicate more significant obstruction.
